It was during a 5th grade parent teacher conference I became aware my writing skills were perhaps above average. Mom told the teacher, "I'd like to see him do better in math", and the teacher replied, "well yes, but have you ever read any of his writing? He's a wonderful writer".
Writing seemed to come naturally to me. But, at 10, you don't really appreciate the gifts you have, or know what to do with them. It was just something I could do. Do birds appreciate flying? No, they just do it.
Birds fly, writers write. At least, that's how it is for me.
In high school I joined the speech and debate team at the suggestion of my mom, who said, "why don't you join speech and debate, you like to argue". She was funny like that, and though that was true, it actually ended up teaching me how to be a better writer.
It encouraged me to write, in a way that would appeal to a wider audience than just myself. It empowered me with the skills to persuade and inform readers and listeners alike.
During college, I began writing poetry, entering and winning several competitions. Poetry opened a door, and it allowed me to explore other forms of writing, which in turn led to my love of prose.
Then, life happened. Job, marriage, and becoming a father to my wonderful son. It wasn't until much later that I was able to revisit and return to my love of writing.
At the tender age of 50, I began writing what would become the first, in a series of 5 books in the Neil: Metamorphosis franchise. Combining my love of murder and bugs, the title character, Neil emerged.
At 64, I published book 1 (Emergence). It's never too late to realize and utilize the gifts we are given, and share them with the world.
